2 roads won't be renamed after Chavez

Cesar Chavez Street, TX
DALLAS (AP) - The effort to rename two Dallas streets for Cesar Chavez failed Monday.

Several Latino leaders in the nation's ninth-largest city have been upset that Industrial Boulevard won't be renamed despite a city survey that had “Cesar Chavez Avenue” the overwhelming favorite for the road's new name.

The City Council votes Monday not to rename Industrial or Ross Avenue - activists' second choice - weren't unexpected. The city has said it wants to look at other streets as possibilities to honor the late labor and civil rights activist.

The Council voted 12-3 to rename Industrial to Riverfront Boulevard. The Council voted unanimously that Ross will remain Ross.

“I think it's just disappointing, but we'll overcome this obstacle and we'll work and find an appropriate location for Cesar Chavez street or a building,” said Cesar Chavez Task Force leader Alberto Ruiz.

“We're just determined to have it in downtown Dallas,” he said.

Mayor Tom Leppert, who has said the survey wasn't binding, said he'll direct a committee to a street to honor Cesar Chavez within 90 days.

Industrial - lined with liquor stores and bail bond offices - is a key piece of a planned $2 billion urban makeover. Under the Trinity River Corridor Project, the street will be a gateway to a planned area with parks and urban trails.

Council member Angela Hunt said that the city should have made it clear that only names related to river and Trinity would be acceptable for the renaming of the street. Hunt, who voted in favor of Riverfront Boulevard, said it is the best name for a street in the area the city is hoping to transform.

“The point was to find a name and tie it to the river,” she said.

She said she wants to find another way to honor Chavez, like possibly naming downtown's farmer's market for him.

As far as Ross Avenue, she said that she talked with residents on the street and found they were 74 against, one in favor of changing. “This is one of our oldest streets. ... It was important to me that we maintain the history of our city.”
