Protesters tear down billboard offering to pay drug addicts to use birth control

Protesters tear down billboard offering to pay drug addicts to use birth controlOAKLAND (AP) - A billboard offering drug addicts $200 to use birth control was torn down minutes after it went up Tuesday.

Protesters call it an attempt by rich white people to target poor minorities.

Three more billboards planned for the Bay Area are now on hold. They are part of a national campaign by an Orange County woman to prevent mothers from giving birth to crack-addicted babies. Anaheim mother Barbara Harris brought her campaign to the Bay Area after a local businessman offered to pay for the billboards.

Others have gone up in Southern California, Fresno, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Tucson, and Phoenix, and none has faced opposition like that in Oakland, Harris said.

The Oakland billboard read, ’If you are addicted to drugs - Get birth control- get $200 cash.''

A press release said, ’Get sterilized - Get $200.''

’It's saying, 'Neuter poor women,' '' said Ethel Long-Scott, 45, head of the Women's Economic Agenda Project, a 17-year-old group that deals with the politics of race and class issues.

’You are not wanted,'' Long-Scott shouted to Harris and her supporters. ’Take your money and get out of Oakland. Take that to the rich neighborhoods.''

Harris, who is white, is married to a black man and has adopted four crack-addicted babies. She says her mission has nothing to do with class or race. So far, 85 women have taken her up on her offer, she says, and 36 of them are white. No men have accepted, though the offer is extended to them as well.
