Man convicted of harassing black couple on LA-Philly flight
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A white man accused of harassing a black couple aboard a Los Angeles-to-Philadelphia flight was convicted of harassment and ethnic intimidation and sentenced to six months' probation.
A municipal judge also sentenced Robert Baldwin to 200 hours of community service at a facility that promotes racial tolerance and ordered him to pay a $1,300 fine.
The couple sitting in front of Baldwin on a flight last summer said he used racial slurs, kicked the backs of their chairs and put his bare feet on their armrest. E. Steven Collins, a radio host and sales manager, said the incident happened while he and his wife were returning from a wedding.
Collins said he told a flight attendant about Baldwin's behavior and that the attendant asked Baldwin to stop. Baldwin, a self-employed engineer from the Philadelphia suburb of Blue Bell, was later arrested at the baggage claim.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph Khan said he was satisfied with the outcome of the case.
’The sentence was designed to make sure that he recognized that what he did was wrong," Khan said.
Baldwin's attorney, Mark Cedrone, said his client was disappointed and considering an appeal.
