Embracing Diversity At Your College

Diversity At Your College: The Course That Lasts Four Years (But Doesn't Cost A Penny) During your time in college, one of the greatest educational experiences you will have is the exposure you will get to people who are different from you. The colleges you are applying to probably offer cultural diversity as one of their many selling points. To make good on the promise of providing students with a diverse experience in school, most colleges try their best to have as diverse a student population as possible, to have a student body that reflects all the many different types of people who live in the world -- yourself included.

Diversity You'll Encounter: Economic, Ethnic, Religious, and Sexual. To Name A Few Colleges seek to admit students from every economic group. If you're like most people, the place where you went to high school for the most part was a home to people of similar economic backgrounds. In all likelihood, you will meet people at college who are richer than you, and those who are poorer than you.

Often the categories that come to mind when discussion of diversity comes up are race and ethnicity. College is supposed to be a broadening, culturing experience for you, so it's a pretty efficient way for you to become a cultured person if you can be exposed to people of every race, from every country around the world. Another facet of multiculturalism is religion. Unless you are attending a college with a religious affiliation, you can expect that you will encounter students who practice different religions from you. And yet another diversity issue that often comes up for people at first during their college careers is sexuality. For a lot of people, college is the first time they meet openly gay people, as well as the first time they decide they can be openly gay themselves.

Tolerance and Acceptance: The Best Attitudes College Students of Diversity Can Have If you are one of those people for whom college is the first time in your life when you live in such a heterogeneous community, you're not alone. If you are coming from a background where everybody was pretty much like everybody else, don't feel bad if at first you're not sure how to navigate your new surroundings. But remember, regardless of how different someone appears to you, at heart, the two of you share many things in common -- the fact that you both decided to attend the same school, and the fact that you're the same age is enough to tell you that.
