Impacting Minority IssueAre YOU a Minority?
By Charles Terry, Editorial on Impacting Minority Issues
Some of the definitions that Webster dictionary gives for the word minority is as follows:
- a) the period before attainment of majority
b) the state of being a legal minor
- a) the smaller in number of two groups constituting a whole; specifically : a group having less than the number of votes necessary for control
- a) a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics and often subjected to differential treatment
b) a member of a minority group
The opposite of majority would be a pretty simple definition as well. But let’s view the words like follows: Minority and Majority. When American Society hears the word minority they automatically associate it with anyone that’s not European or Caucasian. African, Latino or Asian Americans are most likely the first groups that come to mind.
If you’re not aware of the power of words then you should be. What comes out of your mouth holds a tremendous amount of power and influence. Violence, infidelity and all types of other things can happen just from the power of “influential words”. (Positive words still hold more power though!!)
The reason I wanted to write about this is because I heard a National radio show host (Kevin Wall) discussing the “social Make-up” of America. With him being a Caucasian American there seemed to be a considerable level of fear and frustration regarding some recent studies that say in another 50 years or so the Latino population will become the majority race in America.
All of these studies don’t mean much to because I use my common sense and keep my ear to the streets. My Aunt (who stays in Jersey) told me 5 years ago that the Latinos would soon become the majority in America.
Now this doesn’t really affect me because according to America I would still be considered what I’ve always been considered, a “minority”. This word is crap to me. Technically I can be considered a minority since I belong to a minority race group in this country, but I refuse to accept this title and neither should you.
It’s funny because Kevin Wall asked people how they would feel about becoming the majority minority. What does that mean? I will tell you what it means. The mindset of the majority group Americans (Caucasians) seems to be that they minority groups should stay the minority in this country. Now, I’m not putting all Caucasians into this category, but I truly believe I’m not that far off.
Illegal immigration has been going on for decades, but I believe Caucasian Americans are complaining now because there are too many Latinos in America. And if the Latinos become the majority then that means they will be in a position to control the country. My small Ohio hometown has had a plethora of Spanish only speaking individuals in it for many years!
It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out. I’ve heard Glenn Beck repeatedly say he wishes America would revert back to the way it was in the 50’s, but in the 50’s my Grandfather was being called “boy” by his Grandfather. Not literally, but you know what I mean.
I do not want America to revert back to the 50’s and I do not want us to continue down the path of destruction that we are on right now, but a drastic change is necessary.
The Caucasians becoming the minority in America is probably not what the “fore fathers” wanted but, the fore fathers also owned slaves and at one point even described them as 3/5ths of a man! (I thought that all men were created equal?) In a country where I’ve always been considered the “minority” it will be entertaining to see the reactions of everyone if the “majority” becomes the “minority” and vice versa.
